Comic closet was created as a part of my senior thesis assignment. Starting back in January of 2022 until December of the same year, my peers and I were required to come up with a solution to a problem we encounter in our lives.
Growing up in a family who embraced the culture of nerdom made it easy for me to fall in love with everything that lies within that word. By the time I was roughly twelve years old, my father had given me his assortment of comics that helped to ignite my interest in the genre. From there, my collection grew exponentially along with my knowledge of all things related to adventurers, heroes, and villains.
Comic collectors need to have a way to easily organize their comics because the amount of books they now own has become too much to handle.
Visually it was understood that Comic Closet, like the books it helps organize, needed to be bold and have weight to its design. With this in mind, sketches of a logo began to emerge. A total of fifty different drawings were produced. The thirty-seventh illustration was chosen and only modified slightly. The logo depicts a simple linear masked hero with the iconic spit curl that so many caped crusaders dawn. The line weight is heavy and conveys a sense of presence akin to what is seen within the panels of comics.
These logo roughs were done at a time where Boom Books was still the decided name of the company. Explosive imagery in a simplified stylewas tested to capture the dynamic feel that the name was trying to convey. Boom Books became Comic Closet to represent what the company provides more clearly.
Today, competition in this environment is increasingly present. Apps like Discoggs and Good Reads offer cataloging services for the collectors market of vinyl records and novels, respectively. Other comic cataloging services have interfaces that are not user friendly and do not offer a social element.
Comic Closet will not do any good if no one knows about it. The advertising strategy needs to reach the most people in a short amount of time. This will be accomplished through a series of print, digital, and street advertisements.
